dB Broadcast is your independent partner for broadcast system integration and consultancy.
As the largest and most respected independent UK system integrator, dB Broadcast has an outstanding track record of delivering the largest projects. The same attention to detail is applied to its smaller projects worldwide.
Our solutions embrace the broadcast industry’s transition to new formats and different standards in an IT-converged, data-driven world. The large permanent team is continually trained in all the latest broadcast technologies: UHDTV, PTP timing, SDI over IP, AoIP, mobile TV.
Consultancy is an increasing part of our services. We help our clients understand the benefits of new developments in broadcasting and provide impartial, informed advice for cost effective investments.
dB also designs and manufactures the Cardinal range of mains distribution units, Hawkeye ASI monitoring and switching modules, MERlin and Showman receivers as well as solving client problems by providing special products.
Founded in 1989, independently owned dB Broadcast is one of the largest and most respected independent UK systems integrators and is a centre of excellence for the delivery of modern day, fit for purpose broadcast systems. The company is expert in solutions design, systems build and integration, migration and support for both traditional and new technology broadcast systems. Consultancy and after-sales support are an increasing part of dB’s portfolio of services. Broadcast technology becomes ever more sophisticated, and developments in IP-driven systems are changing the role of the systems integrator (SI). Broadcasters know that an IP-based route is the future, but in many cases are unclear as to the best way for them to go. The sheer pace of change presents new challenges, as the products, standards and skills necessary to realise this vision fully are often not in place, requiring work-arounds and bespoke approaches – a challenge that SIs are uniquely placed to address. Broadcasters also require advice that is independent of particular hardware and software providers, yet which has insight into vendor roadmaps for the latest solutions. As the name implies, an important part of the role of the Systems Integrator is to ensure that products work together properly, and where necessary to resolve any conflicts. This requires managed discussions between suppliers to ensure that each piece of equipment communicates with other equipment as required. Most often, any problems involve software issues between dedicated products or between software products.
We deliver consultancy from small wiring projects through to large multi-million pound facilities. As broadcast technology becomes ever more sophisticated, the decisions around system design become more complex too. The pace of technology change means that clients often look for external support and advice in evaluating and selecting the optimum technology architecture to meet their current and future business needs. dB Broadcast is increasingly undertaking consultancy work to help its clients understand this changing environment and how best to leverage the benefits. Broadcasters require advice that is independent of particular hardware and software providers, and which has insight into vendor roadmaps for the latest solutions. Many now engage in ‘Proof of Concept’ testing before determining their technology strategies. An understanding of media workflows and the design of efficient migration strategies adds further value for clients. To gather, define and rationalise overlapping and often conflicting requirements and drivers from all parts of the operation using business process analysis is an intricate task, one that the dB Broadcast team feels it is uniquely placed to carry out, based on its considerable industry experience across a broad range of disciplines.
The Cardinal range of intelligent mains distribution units provides 12 separate outputs, an SNMP interface, email messaging and a choice of single or dual inputs and optional temperature sensing – all in a 1RU unit. With a choice of single input or dual input changeover versions, inrush current protection and optional temperature and humidity sensor, the Cardinal iMDU provides a comprehensive solution for remote control and management of power distribution in an equipment rack.
The Hawkeye range of modular products has been developed to monitor and switch all types of broadcast signals including ASI transport streams. The range also includes DVB-S and DVB-T2 receivers. Automatic operation is configurable by the user and switching may also be externally controlled and monitored by means of serial or ethernet (SNMP) control. This Hawkeye IQ modular range is compatible with the SAM IQ modular frame, and has been developed to monitor and switch broadcast signals including ASI transport streams. Any combination and mix of Hawkeye and SAM IQ modules can be housed in the same frame saving space and money. The IQ frame, PSUs and any appropriate Snell modules are available direct from dB Broadcast. To date, in excess of 10,000 Hawkeye modules have been delivered.
MERlin is a self-contained receiver for continuous off-air demodulation and monitoring of DVB-T2 and DVB-T signals. MERlin monitors input RF modulation parameters and signal performance metrics including Modulation Error Ratio (MER) and Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) status. The product allows a template to be generated, which is used to compare the received DVB-T2 signal against expected parameters. If the received DVB-T2 signal is different to a stored template, an alarm can be generated. Seven fixed templates and eight programmable templates are provided. The fixed templates correspond to the UK transmission standards for DVB-T2. Designed for high reliability for use at remote sites, MERlin combines technical performance and versatility with excellent value in a 1RU package
